One day with Gmail Mobile on Nokia e61
It's high time for mobile apps to go mainstream in the U.S. I'm really tired of having great smartphone hardware with little in the way of useful apps to access my life on the web! Sure SMS is great for Twitter and Dodgeball but I'm really excited to see Google taking full advantage of Symbian via their new J2ME Gmail app for Symbian. When hitting their mobile site, it rightly greets my Nokia e61 by name and installs swiftly. There is some confusion about browsers on the e61 since there is both a WAP browser and a modern one based on Apple's Webkit.
So, after one day of usage, I'm giving it 4 stars. My e61 is now worth the money paid. The only thing missing for me is a camera for moblogging. I quit looking for an IMAP host supporting IDLE for near-Blackberry push email.
A few things I having trouble with
- From search box, my text keys are inserting numbers, e.g., the F key yields a 4 and the H key a 6 - the ctrl. key is not on?!
- Alerts for new mail. Since Gmail app stays connected to EDGE (on T-Mobile), why can't it signal via hardware speaker?

I just started using this app today - it's pretty sweet! Before I was using Opera Mini and had to log in almost every time. I bet they'll eventually integrate audio alerts, but it's probably just a matter of vendor hardware compatibility at the moment.
This is the first time I've ever heard of Dodgeball, if only I had more friends who were txt freaks like me I'd definitely start using it!
